Norway student visa

Norway is a popular study abroad destination in Europe with over 12,000 students pursuing their higher education here. The country has over 70 public and private educational institutes offering a variety of courses. The duration of the various level of course in the country are:

• Bachelor’s degree: 3 years
• Master’s degree: 2 or 5 years
• Doctorate: 3-year research-oriented education which may include 1 additional year for teaching

The universities here follow the Bologna system like other European nations.

Eligibility requirements

You must have been accepted into a university or institution in Norway.

The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education must accredit the university or college (NOKUT).

You must enroll in a full-time program.

You must be able to pay for your tuition as well as your living expenses. In addition to tuition, you’ll require at least NOK 123,519 (about USD 13,600) every year in living expenses. This money must be kept in a Norwegian bank account.

The funding can come from your own pocket, as well as student loans and grants.

You can use the money from a part-time job toward the needed amount if you get one.

You must have found somewhere to stay in Norway.

Language requirement

Though international students can enroll for courses taught in English, it is beneficial if they learn the Norwegian language. This will help them communicate with the local community and get familiar with the local culture. They will be able to understand Swedish and Danish, as these languages are very similar to Norwegian. Students can enroll in the language courses available at many universities.

A minimum level of English language proficiency is required. The test scores accepted by universities in Netherlands:

• TOEFL
• IELTS

Tuition fees and living costs

Most universities in Norway are state-funded and offer free education. However non-EU students may have to pay tuition fees in certain universities. The cost of living here is on the higher side.

Student visa requirements

Non-EU nationals require a student visa to study here if the course has a duration of six months. Documents required for student visa application include:

• A completed application form
• Receipt of having paid the visa application fees
• A valid passport
• Two recent passport-size photos
• Proof of admission to a full-time study program in Norway
• Proof of having the required financial resources to cover your educational and living expenses during your course of study
• Proof of accommodation
• Proof that you will leave Norway when your residence permit expires

Working while you study:

Students from non-EU countries can work here during their course. A student can work for 20 hours in a week during the program and full-time during vacation breaks.

Norway student dependent visa

International students who come here on a study permit can bring their dependents including their spouse and children on a student dependent visa.

Family members of students can apply for a work or residence permit provided the student visa holder has the minimum income as per the government.
